Bath Stone is a 'freestone' (a rock which can be sawn in any direction) which occurs within stratigraphic layers within a limestone unit known as the Great Oolite.
The Great Oolite underlies the area of NE Somerset/Avon and West Wiltshire. It has been worked from opencast quarries and from underground mines, a few of which, continue to operate in the area of NE Somerset and West Wiltshire.
